Wine, Beer, and Spirits>What beers are you enjoying?
BlackDog 07:03 PM 04-05-2010
Went out for dinner with my daughter. Had 2 pints of Deschutes Black Butte Porter. This is really a fine porter. If you like porters or stouts, try this for sure.

Gonna give a Norwegian Russian Imperial Stout a try this evening.
Nogne O..... anyone ever try this one?
Thoughts?

My first impressions were molasses, caramel, vanilla, and something a little fruity/floral mix.
The floral may have been imparted by my cigar though:-)

I look forward to comparing side by side with a KBS. Might have to split them with someone else.
I got the South Central GI Bourbon County bought up!
I can only get it in 24oz. bottles though.:-)

That stuff is good for something from Chicago!:-)

Worked from home today, had furnace issues. Did a side-by-side comparison of Deschues Black Butte and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald porters.

The nose of the EF is maltier. I really don't notice much aroma at all from the BB. The EF smells like malt brewing on my stovetop.

The EF is a bit sharper in flavor. Certainly drier, and a little more astringent. Malt is front and center here. The BB is definitely sweeter, with the coffee and chocolate notes more pronounced. BB has a softer mouthfeel too.

It's a tough call, but personally I give the nod to BB. I'm sure that EF is the more traditional porter, but I find BB to be more complex, and more nicely balanced.

Cracked open the first of a 4 pack of Oskar Blues GUBNA Imperial IPA (10% abv 100 IBUs).

Poured into the glass with little carbonation but with a beautiful golden hazy color. Stuck my honker into the glass and....

WEED... and I mean dank weed. Not a hint, not a note, not a similar aroma, this beer smelled like it was dry hopped with marijuana. I smelled it every time I took a sip and while off putting, the beer itself was a monster, and quite tasty.

I thought I was nuts picking up on the bud smell, did a google search and apparently lots of others noticed it too. Weird, but worth a try, even at 4.00 a 12 oz. can.
