My friends dad just bought one for himself. I held it for a few mins. Its considerably heavier than other phones such as the envyII and III and the buttons have a stiff click to them. Still seemed like a very nice phone to me.

They're billing it as a media phone, but it doesn't play .avi/xvid/divx, which is THE STANDARD for video still, despite the advancement of newer codecs. I still cannot fathom for the life of me why playback of those files is not supported on the droid (any droid), and frankly, its a dealbreaker for me IF I had intentions of using it as a media phone.

Getting back, I got mine on Friday and activated it on Saturday AM. So far it is great! Really speedy. The Motoblur lite or whatever you want to call it is decent and pretty unobtrusive - if you don't want it just pull off the widgets. The dialer is really snappy and fast and the browsing experience is compelling. Battery was acting goofy but Moto put out an OTA update already which helped a lot. Really looking forward to FroYo now.

I was pretty dead set on keeping my Eris as a backup phone but I see they are selling for upwards of and over $200 and mine is in super condition with a bunch of extras. Going to have to think about this one...I could use the dough...

The galaxy looks bad-ass. How do you like your Evo?

Evo is cool and a lot of fun, already rooted, have flash and everything.
Galaxy will have netflix though and thats the closer for me. Just worried rooting will be harder like on the Droid x. HTC buts no blocks to rooting or hardly anything. Worried Samsung will be like Motorola. ALso physical keyboard again will be a win!
All and all Evo is a bad ass phone though dont get me wrong.

I was a tiny bit concerned about the difficulty with the X being rooted...until I remembered that in all the time I had my Eris I didn't root it or anything. I did the whole custom ROM thing with my WinMo phones and while they were an improvement over stock the negatives always outweighed the positives for me. I need my phone to be reliable, it's a tool first and a toy second (but close second
:-)). Anyway I think they will figure it out, now it's a challenge and I think that will drive it, also it seems to be a pretty popular device. I would just like to be able to use the WIFI tether without the extra $20 and to get rid of the couple of bloatwear programs.
If I was going to leave Verizon right now it would only be for the EVO.

Galaxy looks nice, love the display!

Rooting shouldn't be a problem for any phone that's popular. If you're getting something like the MOTOROLA DEVOUR (not sure who would ever buy it, given the other options available), then good luck getting it rooted.
(knowing my luck, someone already did root and proved me wrong).... but anything with a big user base will eventually be rooted, whether the manufacturer likes it or not. My Droid certainly was.
Reasons I chose to root:
1. Overclocking - stock 550mhz, now I run at 1gz and keep pace with the new phones. (no battery life loss either)
2. Reliability and backup. I routinely make a backup image of my phone every few weeks. Anything goes haywire, I can re-flash back to working with little no data loss in half a dozen keystrokes and about 5 minutes of time while the image copies over. Only had to do it once, but it saved my but because I was traveling at the time, and like most, I would be dead in the water without my phone!
3. Free wifi tether. painless, works, end of subject!
4. Take a few bloatware apps included with the phone.
So far, no regrets on that decision. Of course, I'm not a member of the flash-a-new-rom-every-3-days-just-to-try-it-out crowd. I find what works and stick with it, I don't need the newest bit of code. I'll probably upgrade to 2.2 FroYo next week, which will be the first time making any changes since... probably March.

And done: Rooted, bloatware uninstalled and wifi tether activated. Root FTW!

WOW very cool. Initially they were saying there was some kill switch in the phone that ran a consistency check to make sure it was not rooted. Looks like hackers whooped Motorola fast on that one.
I am so pissed the screen on my evo is acting up. Going to flash a new rom and then try stock rom. Looks like it may be getting replaced. Hurray for Best Buy warranty. Definetly getting the Samsung Epic though. The screen acting up and having keyboard issues makes me miss a hard keyboard bad.
I will say watching new release movies using flash is badass.

Actually rooting is only half the battle (and the easy half). The eFuse supposedly locks down the boot loader. You can root but you cannot load any ROMs or custom firmware, that is what gets checked. I still think someone will figure it out.

Ahhhhhh that was what I heard. I thought they said it would brick with a custom Rom.
So pissed. My screen has some dead spots.
