I'd like to hear more about skyfire, too. I read it doesn't work with ipad, that sucks.
Its never been much of an issue with me and flash, but I might like to use it somewhere along the way.

I just downloaded Atomic Lite and so far I like it. I may spend the .99 for the full version. Don't know what I'd use Flash for just yet......

ABC just launched a new iPad news app (or I just discovered it).
Very nice. I wish USA Today had something like it.

Playon

If you have a ps3 you know what it is, now they have an app for the iPhone too.

Netflix, Hulu, espn , CBS, etc etc etc. A little pricey, but tons of content. And, for you Hulu fans, no more $10 per month fee

Found an app that is sure to be one of my favorites; Hop Stop.

You have to register your phone on Hop Stop, then activate, but it's free.

It has many large cities, and in my case New York is entered.

You use your current location, then enter your destination and it maps out your best subway or bus route.

The 3Gs and 4G have an app that allows you to hold the phone in different positions and actually see a compass pointing you to the station with the distance displayed.

I am headed to NYC and am pre-programming some of the trips that I have planned and simply save them for future reference.

Very cool app that is free.

I don't know if anyone mentioned Heytell. It's like free push to talk. Great for not texting in the car.:-)

Mobile Mouse Pro is free today if anyone is interested. I use it when I connect my laptop to my TV.

just got my iphone 4 for Verizon yesterday and have two questions for you seasoned iphone users.

1.) Does the iphone have an app to shut down applications that are constantly running? For my droid I had something called Advanced Task Killer that would shut down apps and help save battery life.

2.) Is there a way to set my phone so I only receive signal on US towers? I work near the Canadian border and don't want to be getting nailed in roaming charges. I had to set my droid to home only towers and that saved me but so far I cant find a way to do it with the iphone.

Thanks

There may an app for Jailbroken phones to do them all at once, but otherwise, you have to do it one at a time. Leaving apps on isn't supposed to use much battery life. It just keeps them in the state you left them. Most aren't really running in the background.
Double click the home button, then hold down one of the icons on the bottom. When they start wiggling, press the red minus sign.

You can turn off data roaming. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for, though. settings --> General --> Network --> Data Roaming.

Thanks for the info on the first question but for the second one I still want to be able to use my phones full capabilities. With the droid I was able to still use the internet and what not, it just wouldnt pick up mexican cell towers when I was working on the southern border.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the iPhone shouldn't be able to roam internationally...

My iPhone 4 (and my wife's iPhone 3) work quite well internationally. We have used them in Mexico, Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Portugal, Spain and Gibralter. No problems.

Did you have to tell AT&T you were traveling? Were you charged roaming fees?

Bump for a good question. We're going to Dominican in a couple weeks, and I keep getting conflicting information.

Same here.
Have used in Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, Bahamas, Haiti, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico to name a few.
Absolutely no issues.
In fact, out of our group of 6 recently on a cruise, i had the best reception.

To answer the roaming fees questions........YES........and not cheap.
Would use it for necessity only and not for kicks and giggles.
Next time will look to see if a SIM for the new iPhone 4 (much smaller) is available for international calling and data.

Yes and Yes. My plan already had international calling included ("No Charge"). I added the "World Traveler" plan for $5.99/phone/month. This is pro-rated, so you only need to have it enabled for the time you are out of the country. (Used to be you had to have it enabled until all the charges came through, which could take 60-90 days sometimes...)

The World Traveler plan reduces the roaming charges that you pay in other countries. In some cases the reduction is a lot, in others not so much. You can get more info on the rates from the AT&T (or Verizon) web site or by calling them. The WT plan also includes free incoming text messages. Outgoing messages cost 50 cents each I think, or you can buy a plan (never have done that).

If you think you will be on the phone for more than a few minutes the WT plan is worth it.

We initially got the WT plan for emergencies in case our kids needed to get in touch with us. We kept on getting the WT plan for our international travel after repeated "drunk calling" our friends to tell them how much fun we were having :-)

If you do not tell AT&T you are much more likely to spend a lot more money than you need to should you end up making any calls.

Also, make sure that "Data Roaming" is turned off. Unless you get a package for International Data, data roaming is very, very expensive. (So are the packages).

Just go ahead and call me the national poster child for this.
