Buy in bulk or by the tin?

You need to add a third option... BOTH!

I buy some things in bulk and other things in tins. And sometimes the same blend in both formats.

I do like bulk as cheaper.

Anything I'm aging or trying for the first time I get in a tin. I think the original tins age better and I like having the artwork for a first-time blend. If it winds up becoming a regular smoke then I'll also get some in bulk if available for day to day smoking.

I like tins because well rattrays and Ashton don't make bulk. But bulk certainly has it's merits price being one of them and I love Stokebies English Luxury.

Tins, only because I'm just starting pipes and need to try many things to see what I like. After I've settled in on a few, then bulk makes more sense.

Hmmm, seems I must be confused then. :-)

Here's a Merry Christmas gift to you - Rattrays in bulk is available here... http://www.marscigars.com/rattrays-1.aspx You save about $10 for 500 grams in bulk -vs- five 100g tins.

Cannot do the same for Ashton, sorry.

Of course, you can go to JR Cigars and get 100g tins of Rattrays fo $9.50 a tin. I am not sure how that works out with the revamped shipping charges, but I think it would be about $65.

And, there might be others that do Rattray in bulk, but I am simply not aware of it.

For what that is all worth.

Both but only tin for a few things that aren't available in bulk. Specifically Escudo, Scottish Cake, and Embarcadero.

All of my Gawith Blends (Best Brown, FVF, and St. James Flake) are all bought in 1lb bulk.

Rattray's is cheaper here:

As far as the JRs equation goes, if you have a store near you or you come across one when travelling, buying the tins is cheaper than buying it in bulk but only if you don't have to pay shipping on them.
