My mother made sure I knew who Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa were when I was younger, any rock drummer worth their salt these days will always like one or both of those gentlemen as some of their influences.

From the same concert, with a little more coverage. I didn't realize this until now, but he suffered a heart attack DURING the performance...and still played on.

I saw Cobham live twice back in the '70s, with John McLaughlin in Mahavishnu Orchestra. One time was an outside festival, when they opened for The Allman Brothers. During the set, both Butch Trucks and Jai J. Johanson were sitting on the stacks behind Billy, just watching what he was doing, likely hoping to learn a few tricks.

Cobham is one of the greatest. Mahavishnu spawned the whole jazz fusion movement. This sure brought back memories.
Simon Phillips is another all time great drummer. Check out his Wikipedia entry. I'm embarrassed to say I played drums when we're talking about these guys.:-)
