OK let’s establish some givens:
1.	I have a small 20 capacity desk humi
2.	My preferred Rh is 70%
3.	I prefer to spend my limited cash on cigars then accessories.
I have been keeping my smokes humidified using Xikar Crystal Gel 4oz. They smoke well with no issues.
Is it necessary to purchase a hygrometer to monitor the gel? Several botl have done away with hygrometers when using beads. So are crystal gels that much different in a small box?

If they are smoking well with no issues then nothing else matters no matter what anyone says.
IMO, a hygrometer for a 20 count humidor is pointless.

Wise words old man!
:-)
This applies to any size humidor/cabinet or cooler. Judge your Rh by how your cigars smoke for you.

While we are establishing givens:
Never look a gift horse in the mouth.
The Blackhawks are the best team in the NHL.
Peter (pnoon) is a very wise man.

If you go with Gel Bar or Heartfelt beads i wouldnt worry about a hygro too much as you have a visible way to tell that they are charged.
With Hcm beads i would get a hygro.

I have a small desktop humidor that I've had for many years - and I have never had troubles with the humidity in it. I think if your cigars are smoking good, then I would not worry about it.
I don't think a hydrometer would be a bad investment because odds are good you're going to get something bigger, that does really call for a hydro one of these days. Also, if it helps you sleep better at night.
