They are not necessary but they are nice to have. The only necessities are the tupperware and a humidification source.

I use some spanish cedar sheets in my tupperdor, but I only have recently put them in there.

I put some in mine, mainly just because I like the smell. Be sure to put a hygrometer in there, also.
