Island (The other ones) Reviews>Cheap bastid review: Quorum Shade robusto

This is a new(er) cigar from JC Newman. Can't find much info about it, but I doubt the manufacturer would put out a detailed press release about a mixed filler cigar that retails for under 2 bucks.

I used to smoke the regular Quorums once in a while when I was a noob, and when I saw this new wrapper version, I figured what the hell, I'll try one. I'm a sucker for cheap Connecticut wrap cigars.

Quorum is touted as "the world's most popular bundle cigar" blah blah...I'm sure most bundle cigar makers say the same thing. ANYWAY...on to the review.

I was shocked at how good this cigar was. Honestly. I figured the first inch or so would be bland but tolerable, then the cigar would start to burn hot and collapse. Not the case. Decent burn, not perfect but good enough. Nice flavor, nice aroma, and even a few changes in the flavor along the way. Typical flavors and aromas for a mild CT wrap cigar, no surprises, but enough depth to keep me interested.

I just looked up online prices. $21 a bundle? Hell yeah. I might snag a brick of these cheapos. :-)

Some years ago, I was selected as a reviewer for JR's Cigar Magazine. We had to smoke 3 each of 10 different mixed filler cigars and rate them. The Quorum was one of the better ones.

Now ask how many mixed filler cigars I've bought since then. Answer: 5 and that was due to a misunderstanding!

I love reviews of cheap smokes. I am considering taking my favorite cheap smoke and sending it to some of the people on these board that do a lot of reviews. It's one of the .80 cent wonders.

The question is Mark, that was one cigar;how many out of the bundle are going to be *good*?
If it's a decent number, then they have something.
J.C. Newman has been doing better(for my tastes) making cigars recently.
Brickhouse and El Baton come to mind.I realize they are both premiums but historically,Newman has made nothing that interested me.
The few I did like were way too expensive for a every day cigar.

I like picking up a few cheap cigars for garage work and everyone now and then I get a Quorum. The regular line has a fresh baked bready taste to me. I'll give it try when i see them out.

I have to agree here and as to the mix filler part these are the purest definition of a short fill a customer was complaining about these not being "whole leaf" as he put it so I got to dissecting. And found it to be some short short fill almost like it was ground.

Wow...lots of thumbs down on these. The one I smoked burned pretty well and was solidly made for a mixed fill cigar...guess I better try a few more singles before I declare these a winner.

I have 2 Quorum I picked up a couple months ago that are resting. Hopefully they are decent for the cheap cost.

I was in Total Wine the other dayand saw them in their humidor. Being a noob and not quite a connoisseur i picked up a few of their Shade Maduro's. Although I've had my fair share of good sticks these are good enough for taking a walk around the block with the dog or just screwing around. I'm really addicted to the CAO Brazillia, Brick House Maduro and an occasional Behike. The only thing that impressed me about the Quorum was their burn time. It burned quite awhile for a robusto. I'll keep looking around for a daily driver stick. Any suggestions for a stick on a budget would be greatly appreciated.

I had a Quorum Connie one time. I took two draws and I put it out on my forehead.
I just didn't know what else to do with it.
YMMV. But I'd be surprised.

HAHA! Somebody resurrected this old review, eh? Truth be told, I never did smoke another one of these. Partly because I'm making a little bit better money now and don't need to buy the cigar equivalent of ramen noodles, and partly because I don't smoke as much as I used to. I still enjoy cigars, but I find that I truly enjoy them now. I don't feel the need to just puff on a cigar all the time. So whereas I used to smoke 2-3 cigars a day and 3-4 a day on the weekends, I may only have 1 or 2 throughout the whole week now, and 1-2 per day on the weekends. Quality over quantity. The old saying is true.

:-)
