General Discussion>Need Input on Buying a New TV...
issues 08:56 AM 08-31-2010
My old HDTV died on me (Samsung 42" DLP HL-R4266W) and I am looking for a new one.

I found a deal that looks almost too good to be true so I was hoping to get some feedback before pulling the trigger.

RCA 42LA55RS85 42" LCD HDTV - 1080p, 1920x1080, 16:9, 240Hz, 10000:1 Dynamic, 6.5ms, 4 HDMI

The response time is a little slow and the contrast ratio isn't very high but the 240Hz and low price tag has me intrigued...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sure have. The 2 Best Buys in the area didn't have anything interesting as far as open box items. I would normally take a look at a TV in the show room before making a purchase but these TVs are online orders only and I cannot find anyone else currently carrying them.

Personally, I would never buy an RCA again. I bought one for my father a few years ago, only because it was such a good deal. He's had it replaced via warranty twice, and since the warannty ended, its on its way out again. When I worked in a big box store selling electronics, RCA's came back more often than not.

I had a RCA for a while. Great picture, don't know how durable it might be. I took mine back because there were no codes for other remotes to work the TV. The only remote that would work the TV was the one that came with the TV. I wanted my direct TV remote to run everything.
Maybe they fixed that on newer models.
I have a Vizio, great picture and sound, lot of adjustments to fine tune.

What are your intentions with the TV? Movies? Games? What sports (if any) do you typically watch.

For me I don't play games and I love to watch most sports and I will say I prefer plasma over LCD. However, I have no experience with LED TVs.

I currently own a Panasonic 42" plasma.

It looks like according to your first post you are looking for a 42" in the $600-$700 price range.?

I will be using it for Movies, Gaming and I watch Football and Hockey. I would rather go plasma if I can be sure burn in is no longer a big issue (I know it used to be).

Check out TV's on the Abe's of Maine website. They tend to have very good prices and I have ordered TV's and appliances without any issue from them multiple times.

Can't beat the price on the plasma right now. From what I've read the burn in problem is gone.

I've recommended the samsung LN series to most family and friends. The picture is beautiful. The quality is fantastic and they are just BadAss tv's.

At first look I would be a little gun shy but looking at other 240 Hz TVs listed on bestbuy the specs are not off from the LG etc. I wouldn't personally bet on the RCA being a wow you TV but at the price it might get you through the next few years until the new 3D TVs/tech comes down in price.

+1 for plasma. I have a 58" Samsung plasma that I love the hell out of. I think you can pick them up for under $1500 now. No problems with burn it at all, and for hockey you really want to watch plasma. It's really hard to watch on an lcd, the plasma follows the puck so much smoother. Only negative is that they aren't as bright as lcds so it can be a bit washed out if you have a lot of sunlight in your room. But for movies at night it's simply amazing. The colors to me are just so much richer than lcds and you have a wider viewing angle.

I love my plasma more than my LED. I have a 50" Plasma, the plasma is a LG 50PS60 that I bought on buydig.com for $1000 a year ago so its probably cheaper now. Great picture and sound, I have no complaints.
