My theory: He's a really great drummer, and all the histrionics are just to keep him from getting bored playing such simple music. I used to do the same thing playing bass.
Just judging by his gear, it's highly unlikely that he's just a hobbyist. Ludwig drums are not cheap. Especially a set with two kickers.

Just checked out the dude's myspace page. He's legit. Has his own custom sticks and is featured in an advertisement for the company that made the skins for his drums that look like a hot rod flame paint job.
He's also apparently very busy. Looks like he's booked for about 75% of the days remaining this year.
