A few years back on CS I got a handmade wooden ashtray made for me by Jason, Downunder LLG. This ashtray has been one of the best I have seen yet. Problem is over the years some people have mistakenly placed their hot cigars in the actual ashtray and not on the slots. Is there any way to refinish the ashtray? Here's a pic of the ashtray.

You'd need to heavily sand it, or maybe rout it out. Then apply new finish. Depending on the thickness below the burns, you may be able to get the scars out or decide, they're scars of honor.

You might be able to start with a wood chisel or carving knives to take most of it out before you sand... and, you'll want to remove the finish over the whole surface or you'll never match the interface between the new and old finish.

So it may be more of a hassle than it's really worth?

Its a lot of elbow grease. Whether its worth it depends on your time and interests.
