An Orange Park woman escaped a suspected carjacker Saturday night after burning the man’s face with a cigar and jumping out of the car when he slowed down, police say.
The incident began at about 10 p.m. when Valerie - boyfriend left her in the passenger seat of a Mercury Grand Marquis while he checked into the Motel 6. A man jumped into the driver’s seat of the still-running car and threatened the woman with a handgun as he backed out of the parking lot.
The car had gone a few hundred yards west on Youngerman when Colon burned the carjacker with a lit Black and Mild cigar, according to Sheriff’s Office reports. The Mercury slowed down enough for her to jump out.
Minutes later, a sheriff’s deputy from nearby Clay County reported that they were following a car that matched the Mercury’s description. It was stopped at a Kangaroo station at Blanding and Argyle Forest boulevards.
James -, 21, was arrested on charges of carjacking and kidnapping.
Investigators say they found a fresh burn mark on his right cheek.
