Does anyone else have issue with their palate? About fifty percent of the time my palate is messed up and I don't taste the cigar I am smoking as well as I should. Because of this, most of the time I will smoke a cheaper cigar so that if I can't taste it well it won't be a big loss. The plus side of this is I am able to hold on to really nice cigars for a longer time.

Last year, about this time, I had a really bad sinus infection that lasted several weeks. When it was done I lost most of my sense of smell. Along with that a lot of my taste sensations went away, so I really can't taste, or smell a lot of things anymore. With cigars I can't pick up many fine nuances but can still tell if something tastes good or not.

Since adopting the "Nasal Exhale" a few years ago this has beocme much less of an issue unless I have a cold or its the 14th cigar of the day.

For mouth smokers only - the experience is so much more subtle that it is wasy to envision small things affecting the perception of cigar flavors. How recently you ate or drank, and what what it was at the top of the list.

I've had bouts in the past with temporary dulling of the palate due to either sinus issues or certain toothpastes. Sinuses were easy; start using a nasal irrigation bottle (neilmed). Toothpaste took some time to realize that was the problem; stopped using Colegate and Crest Advanced something-or-another and switched to Tom's of Maine and that solved that problem.

Maybe you need to give your tastebuds a short break?

Palate can be effected by a million things externally and internally. Nose exhale works good, but I can only stand so much before I get sinus issues.

If I miss out on something that is OK. I am casual with my cigars and generally limit to primary tastes and non-palate things like texture, etc...

I would not worry about whether someone tastes 30 things and you taste one or two that you can't name. You'll both rate the cigar the same, so that shows you're still enjoying it similarly.

I have the palate of a goat, but snorking (nose exhale) does help bring out flavors you might be missing. I wouldn't worry too much about it though.:-)

Sometimes this happens to me (YIKES!!) and what I've noticed is ....
-my palate is much more sensitive in the morn, it's great having cigars then.
-as said earlier food you eat and toothpast too affects your taste, so for a few days try eating more bland food, lots of vegis and stuff that's generally natural you know food that's not spicy/salty/sweet.
-as with women ... Absitnence makes the heart grow fonder, so a break can really help. for me a break is at least a week for cigars that is :-) (YIKES!)
-alchohol can deaden my taste especially if it's cold.

think of it as an aging process on your cigars. :-)

Mike I had the same problem for a few months last year, I think it was a sinus thing. Seems to be better right now but it was driving me crazy!

And its not about what other people taste but about smoking a cigar that you know has more flavor then what you are getting from it because you have smoked that cigar many times.

The "nasal irrigation bottle (neilmed)" sounds like something I need to try.

Those with this sort of issue might be surprised to find that they actually have allergies. This time of the year has many stealth allergens and here in Florida the pollen season has been killer already.

The older you get many times the more allergies you acquire. Many are so slight that many don't medicate for them while others suffer full blown attacks. Try taking generic Claritin or something for a couple of weeks and see if it clears up. Might help things a bit.

Also, of course, you could in fact be allergic to cigar smoke and taking a rest will allow for the next rinse and repeat cycle.

Just some thoughts and possibilities.
