I have been hearing alot of talk about these, but I am not sure what they are and what the benefits of having one is.
As far as I can tell, they are just an open based phone that people can develop any type of app for.
Can someone enlighten me? Thanks

Some discussion already happening here:

Basically you are right. So far there are pretty much three different software systems for smart phones (besides the iPhone) - Windows Mobile, Palm OS and BlackBerry OS and now there is Android, which like you said, is open source but also very powerful and user friendly.

I absolutely adore my Iphone and wouldn't even dream of switching to an Android phone at this point however I do think they are the wave of the future. And that in the coming year or so many other carriers will have to adapt their phone OS's to more closely resemble Android's

The VZW Droid Eris? Let me know how you like it. Been reading their thoughts and reviews on it over at Gizmodo. Curious to see how they're going to resolve the whole "multi-touch" thing.

not Droid Eris, that is made by HTC
The Motorola Droid.
The eris has multi-touch, Droid does not (currently, but I'm sure it will eventually)

Actually the Droid does have multi-touch it is just not enabled in all the apps. The latest review I read said that the multitouch is enabled in the picture viewer app, and that it is just as smooth and good as apples. There is thought the Moto didnt enable it across the board cause they are scared of the patent with Apple.

Getting the Motorola Droid tomorrow too..........though I can't pick it up they're Fedexing it too me. Getting it Mon.
5 megapixel camera and the thinest querty keyboard yet.
Also a great Navi app included that has driver and pedestrian modes with driver view of the street.
Dual processor with 16 megabytes. Supposed to be fast.
I've always been with Verizon so I've been waiting for this.
Finally moving into the new age with my first internet browser phone
:-)
Getting the home docking station (many functions) and car bracket for navi display.
I'll be a learner for quite a while
:-)

Jim post up a review or your thoughts once you get some time to really play around with it. I'm definitely thinking about getting this unless I finally decide to switch to AT&T for the iphone
:-)

picked it up at 8am this morning. In class until noon, so will post my thoughts later this afternoon.
However, a bunch of reviews (both video and written) are all over youtube or tech sites (engadget.com , etc)

Someone here at work got one today.
Overall it seems really nice, I'm not a huge fan of the keyboard through. It's really thin and a little cramped so it ends up not being that much more accurate than a touch screen.
I'm still a little more interested in the Eros or whatever they will have coming down the pipe next - I'm due for a yearly upgrade in July.

definitely has room for improvements. Opera helped out some, but not much. The curve is a pretty old phone though, and is a tank otherwise. I'll miss my curve but am liking the Droid alot

found this thread on Google actually, searching for "android cigar apps"
wouldn't be the first time I've done a cigar related google search and was redirected back here.
speaking of phones though, I love my G1. little bulky but I prefer having the touchscreen and a full keyboard.
