It also is indicative of the vitola. There is a discontinued Partagas 898 Unvarnished which comes in an unvarnished box and is a slightly different vitola. 898V is 6 3/4 x 43. The 898UV is 6 1/4 x 42.

I'm not an expert but I think I read somewhere that varnished boxes are better for letting the cigars age due to less air flow. I could have read wrong.

Ive read the same. Apparently there is a difference in LONG term aging. Cant say that Ive had the opportunity to do a side by side
