I bought sone cigars from a B&M locally, and I have a few questions. I smoked a CAO mx2 today and I noticed the wrapper started to peel or fray.. something. Like about 50% thru the cigar. Is this my fault? or is it too dry?

Also, I noticed the cigars I smoked ( yesterday was an AF Gran Reserva and today CAO mx2 ) they seemed kinda harsh-ish on the smoke. I wasnt drawing hard and I didnt have to relight once.

I'm starting to think that the B&M has a shitty humidor system. Maybe they dont even tend to it at all. I dont know anything about buying cigars, but I'll call this my lesson learned. I think from now on I'll be buying from members and off the internet only.

Last thing, was IF the cigars have traces of mold in them. ( again I dont know anything about ciagrs to tell whats what ) How can I check? ANd what if they go into my humidor, it will spread right?

Lastly, are the cigars supposed to feel dry? Or are they supposed to feel slightly moist? Obviously not wet, but like hmm... Not dry ya know? I think I may have wasted some money on this batch of B&M smokes, but lesson learned.

Hey just my two cents but do not give up on a B&M. A good B&M and tobaconist is second to none. For you first point on the wrapper just check you cut. I have found if you take off too much of the cap halfway through the smoke you may see your wrapper start to unroll. As for the feel of the cigar when you squeeze them they should give slightly and not crackle. For the mold the wrapper and the foot will normally show the first signs in the unfortunate circumstance you have some. Nothing in stone here just my thoughts. Keep smoking and asking your questions here.

I agree with Ranger. A good local B&M is a thing of glory. Sounds to me like his smokes were a little "wet". If you were smoking outside in a very humid environment, this could happen as well. Learned my lesson on that one.

Did it start to peel where you cut it or in the middle when you say 50% I'm reading it as you smoked half of it. If it peeled where you cut it maybe you cut a little to much of the cap off.

Are these cigars you tried before ? Maybe they just weren't to you liking.

Check around you area and find a good B&M it's a nice way to try one or two sticks here and there to figure out what you like

Chances are if the sticks have mold you will see it on the wrapper or right on the foot of the cigar.

Dry is not a good thing when dealing with cigars if they felt brittle I'd be concerned. Try to keep some in your humidor for a month or so to let them adjust to prefered RH my personal liking is 61-65 for both NC and CC

dont confuse mold with bloom (oils from the tobacco rising to the surface of the wrapper and drying to a whitish powder). mold smears when wiped. bloom comes off easily. bllom is also a sign of a well aged cigar.

Pilon thanks. I was just wondering about the mold.

And it started to peel like in the middle of the cigar. Not where I cut it. Kinda odd. ( that was on the CAO mx2 )

And These were my first two cigars ever in my life. So I'm messing around with all types and seeing what I like. I did enjoy them both, but I'm not sure HOW to enjoy them if you know what I mean.. As in what flavors to taste for ect.

And my local B&M is some ****, its just one of those Indian Cigars stores that pop up around here. They really don't care much IMO nor do they know much about cigars. I went in there asking questions and all and left with no help and some cigars.

It's good to not draw too hard. But, you also want to space out your puffs and let the cigar cool down a bit. It won't kill you if you have to relight.

And, no disrespect, as a noobie, you may be better off choosing mild cigars. The standard recommendation is Macanudo, which ain't a bad, mild cigar.

Well its not that I did not enjoy the smoke, I did. Its just I was wondering why it was tasting semi-harsh. Are either one of those smokes harsh? ( CAO mx-2 and AF Gran Reserva)

I don't find either of those sticks to be "harsh". Like many things in life, taste is subjective and each cigar has it's own characteristics. Is it "harsh" from start to finish, or, does it become harsh while smoking?
Have you tried to purge your cigar periodically while smoking? Depending on how often you take a draw the tobacco can heat up and in turn cause a harsh or bitter flavor. Give it a shot, I purge often. :-)

It was harsh at first and then smoothened out and then became something else not really harsh but hmmm not like it was in the middle of the smoke.

And as far as purging? Little help there.. haha.

To purge... Before you take a draw/puff, blow gently through your cigar (kind of like when you were a kid and you'd blow through your straw into your drink and then get slapped by your pop):-) for a few seconds at most. Then take a draw/puff and you will taste the difference instantly.
Basically what your doing is burning off the tars and build up, instead of drawing them into your stogie your burning them out. You can also do this with your lighter. I use my lighter to purge when a regular purge doesn't work or my cigar has went out. Hope that helps. :-)

You just blow through the cigar. It clears out the stale smoke.
