I just heard Roy Buchanan on the radio, and it made me think that he and other guitar heroes from my befogged past are sadly overlooked these days. Aside from him I would propose the following are much under-appreciated today:
Johnny Winter
Jeff Beck
Alvin Lee
Freddy King
John McLaughlin
Leslie West
Joe Walsh
And I'm sure that if I strained my tired old brain a bit I'd come up with several more, but I'm too stinkin' lazy. So why don't you guys help me out a bit?
:-)

Bit of a different animal, but:
Leo Kottke
God, there's gotta be more - everybody had an axe back then.
