Discussion>A buddy wants to try pipe smoking
BORIStheBLADE 02:48 PM 03-22-2009
I've been smoking cigars for almost three years with no pipe experience. He told me last week he wants to start pipe smoking and wanted me to pretty much help him get started.
From reading through some of the post on here and talking to cigar friends I'm going to get him a cob pipe for starters. I really don't know what kind of tobacco to get him, but I think he was looking for something that smelled good.

What kind of tobacco do you guys recommend?

thanks

Start him off with some Butternut Burly. It's a aromatic with great taste and it doesn't bite and it smells fantastic both the tobacco and the smoke! Also, The Boswell blends are great like Berry Cobbler and Boswell’s Best.
If I have a rare hankering for an aromatic them are the ones I go to.

x2 on the butternut burley

A good aro with no tongue bite.

If he is looking to get a couple of baccys to try, I would get the following:

1. Butternut Burley
2. GL Pease Westminster or Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader (an english).
3. Rattrays Hal O The Wynd (Virginian)
4. AC Peterson Escudo (Virginia/Perique)

The above would give him a decent selection of the kinds of baccy out there. As an added bonus, the aforementioned baccys are all easy to smoke and have little to no tendency to bite the tongue.

If he is really wanting to get in to it, get him on here and signed up for our Newbie Sampler Trade for pipe tobac.

Oh, and along with the Cob (get only Missouri Mercham), get some pipe cleaners (the fluffy ones) and a Czek pipe tool.

pipesandcigars.com will have everything he needs. :-) Good luck!

Thanks for the info morefifemusic.:-)

I think I'm going to start with the Butter nut. Since the cob pipes are so cheap I'm going to get myself one too and give this a whirl.:-)
