Made by Jim Beam, nice, definitely Rye whiskey. I'd say very good.

Honestly, if your going to spend $40 on a rye, if an extra few bucks isn't a big deal, pick up the Sazerac 18 ($62) or the Thomas Handy ($62) from Buffalo Trace. These are both 1000x better than R1 which is a blend. The regular Sazerac is even better than this, and less than $40. Another great rye is the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, which goes for about $50, also much better than the R1.
Hope this helped.

Thanks. I already decided to pass on the R1. Sazerac 18 is freakin' awsome, when you can find it. I've had the regular Sazerac, it's ok, but no 18.

Just to clarify - It is not called R1 but RI (with a long I - pronounced "rye")

I tasted it in my beverage survey class and it's a very good straightforward rye. Didn't stand out as something special, in my opinion, but wasn't bad at all. The Jim Beam reps admitted that a lot more of the price goes to the marketing of ri (nifty bottle, labeling, etc.) than their other bourbons.

If you can find a bottle of Black Maple Hill 25yo, grab it. They're not making any more, It's an amazing rye. Expensive, but worth every penny.

My favorite rye is Rittenhouse Rye. I can usually get it for under $20 a bottle. I have recently tasted Templeton Prohibition Rye and was very impressed! If you can find it it sells for about $38 a bottle.
