Hello all. Recently picked up a Dunhill root briar. circa 1931. My question is this. It has Prov Prot on it. Would anyone know what that may stand for? Appreciate any help.

Provisional Protection.

I see the Smoking pipes page where the pipe came from and it's a beaut. There's something off here though. According to this site http://www.chicagopipeshow.com/educa...y_Dunhills.pdf Only pipes made in 1917 had the Prov Pro stamping. It certainly would not be uncommon for Dunhills to have an incorrect stamp but that's quite a discrepancy.

Thanks for the link and yes I agree. Nothing seems to match with info I have come across. It has a number 10225/31, which I believe denotes a bent pipe. The stem is straight and the coloration matches the burl on the bowl. It also has a 12 after England which I think might take it to 1932. But never less an interesting piece.

I know that sometimes if a pipe was sent back to the factory for repairs they would restamp the pipe. Even though it is unsmoked, I wonder if this was sent back to have a new stem fitted or some other maintenance? That could account for the conflicting stamps.
