Entertainment>Best (SIMPLE) PC Music Player?
dave 06:06 AM 03-10-2012
I've had it with iTunes and Windows Media Player and Real Audio.

I need a music player that is very simple and lightweight. I've got a library of 30-40K songs, but playing through a 5 year old PC. It takes iTunes about 20 minutes to get going and then wants to update every single time. Agonizing. WMP and RA aren't much better.

I don't need any bells and whistles - I'm not going to catalog every song or make dozens of playlists. I just want to be able to double click an icon and start listening to music.

What do you use?

You can go old school and use WinAmp.

Funny....I'd forgotten all about WinAmp. But since my first post I found mention on interwebs of WinAmp lite. It is playing right now and I think it is exactly what I was looking for. I used WinAmp many years ago, but long since forgot about it. The WinAmp Lite I just installed looks a lot like the early WinAmp. Fast, slick and I can do other stuff while it plays, catalogs, etc. So far, so good!

If you just want to play albums straight through like the old days, take a look at 1by1.
http://mpesch3.de1.cc/1by1.html

A very fast, small (the entire installation is about 180KB), very low memory footprint & low cpu load program. Not a lot of frills, but what it was designed to do, it does quite well. One thing it won't do though, is play FLACs.

Now, if you want a few more features and formats, Foobar2000 is an excellent choice.
http://www.foobar2000.org/

Might lighter footprint than other comparable programs with very accurate decoding.

Both programs are freeware.

I only like VLC player for movies. Windows media player for everything else.

Although for FLAC I do use VLC.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll demo them and decide. At least, I intend to. WinAmp Lite is doing exactly what I wanted so far. When I get a little time to play w/them, I'll try the others. Thanks, again.
