All Cigar Discussion>First experience with B&M mold - long read
GWags 10:22 PM 01-02-2009
I've read about it here but have not had the pleasure of personally experiencing it. I went to a shop I'd never been to in search of Oliva V Maddy's as I had not had the chance to smoke one. I was told this shop would have them. This is the kinda of place where the whole shop is humidified. Every time I walk into one of these "humidified shops" I always think what a pain it would be to keep the whole B&M in a reasonable range, as I panic when my box moves a few points in either direction (new to this since Sept. '08). The guy working was very helpful and we talked as I walked around. I inquired about the Oliva's and he pointed me to the marca I wanted - they had several boxes. I told him I was new to the slopes and he was very helpful and informative to my questions. Since I also like the Tatuaje line he took me to that aisle where they had every Tat 'cept the Black. This aisle had a lot of sticks that were not in cello. For some reason this aisle also had alot of boxes of pluming cigars. No cello, white fuzzy sticks - I'm talking the whole cigar is fuzzy white! It was amazing to see dozens of cigars covered in white fuzz. I asked .... wtf .... response .... plume my man .. plume! We're talking boxes of $9-$18sticks (not in cello) covered in white fuzz! The kind gent bragged about how his customers LOVED these plumed cigars. I asked how long it took for these this to happen ... his answer ... 4-6 weeks usually. The next question was...... answered with ............ MOLD IS GREEN. The guy was very helpfull and I did buy what I was after. But dam I gotta think, that can't be healthy smoking head to foot mold?:-)

Welcome to sales and marketing :-)

Honestly, I have to sometimes convince people that what the see is in fact mold, and not plume. But hey, believe what you will, it all brushes off in the end I guess. :-)

:-) Kind of a funny read, but disgusting to hear about.... I'd worry about breathing in spores walking into that place. Yech.

At least he was friendly enough but sadly misinformed... Mold does not bother me too much until it gets near the foot. :-)

When I see mold I tell someone in the shop. If they say it's mold . . . great, if they say it's plume I'm not going to argue with them. 1/2 the time I feel like they know it's mold but won't admit it because then they have to throw away some of the moldiest ones which eats into their profits. Calling it plume allows them to do nothing and still sell the cigars.
