I joined this group (CS) around 2006 or 2007. In the years that have passed, my participation in the group has waned and increased; but I have never stopped smoking cigars. This group used to be A LOT more active. Was it just another "cigar boom"? Did the transition from Club Stogie to Cigar Asylum eliminate a bunch of online BOTL?
I admit, I don't smoke as many cigars as I used to. I used to smoke 2 or 3 cigars per day (more on weekends) and now I smoke 5 to 7 cigars per week. But I am still quite interested in (and passionate about) cigars. I enjoy reading and posting reviews and general cigar discussion. I like keeping up on the latest cigar related news coming out of Cuba.
So WTF happened? Did people just get bored? Was it just another trend for them? Are they staring at their phones on Facebook instead of Cigar Asylum? What's going on?

I think it's just that life can get busy sometimes. I think about cigar smokers as hard working folks dedicated to their families, careers and providing a good life for loved ones. Additionally long time cigar smokers know what they enjoy and have no need to search endlessly for a smoke they will enjoy.
I guess I'm trying to express that I don't think any event occured or a trend faded to slow things down a bit.
Nice to see you back. Jump right back in and enjoy.
:-)

My opinion: Facebook happened. Lots of Facebook cigar groups that have taken the place of online boards. I'm not really a Facebook guy, so I come here and a couple other boards to get my online cigar interaction.

I tend to agree with Vin. Some ways I think it's because Farcebook seems to be an easier way to attract members since so many people have their face buried in their phones all the time, and also, in some cases, there were some minor exoduses because starting a farcebook group with a specific batch of friends where one could control the membership and not have to deal with disruptive elements; the exodus of the entire MMM crew along with a few others from CBid because they got sick of a certain poster and a few of his sycophantic buddies comes to mind.
The whole Pvff buying out everyone thing left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, then when Pvff imploded a few years ago and all the double-secret back room posts were made public, I think that burned a lot of people.
Farcebook became the easy out.
I have no presence on farcebook, nor do I ever plan to, so you poor bastards are stuck with me.

Oh, good god, reddit. What a gaggle of know-nothing imbeciles that place is. Jesus, I've never seen more misinformation in one place short of a museum displaying exhibits of WWII propaganda.
That place is all about being the first person to post and nothing else.

Ditto to the above and people changed from forums to social media but I prefer the forum style or at least this group.

I still love this place...ten years later. I don't do the Facebook thing (it's the devil).

I’m actually the opposite, I USED to be in Facebook a lot but in recent years have shied away from social media in general (I can’t get past the “look at me, listen to me” culture on there) and have instead focused on joining forums dedicated to interests I enjoy, like cigar asylum!
I feel like places like this forum spend more time focused on the topic or interest at hand rather than seeking “likes” or other forms of self gratification...and I’m not even trying to speak ill of social media folks, but it’s just not something I want to participate in anymore...

I agree with you. Plus, FB has no sense of history. Here, you can search or scroll through threads going back to the founding of the board 10 years ago.
I miss many of those who jumped over to FB and the like and wish that they would come back. But I also recognize that many of us need a place to call home. CA is home for me.

This is my favorite forum, but it's also one of the more restricted I participate in even though I consider myself among good friends here. At a herf we talk about everything and anything. On-line we tend to moderate ourselves more. No religion, politics or controversial topics and even in the Habanos section we're extremely circumspect. I think that stifles activity a bit. Not saying it's wrong or I disagree, but I've noticed over the years the more a forum is moderated in terms of allowed topics the less activity there tends to be. It is what it is.
I've also noticed few reviews are posted anymore which probably doesn't impact those of us who have been around awhile but doesn't exactly make the site interesting to newbies.
But that's just my take and I'm old and confused.

I don't get into the FB cigar groups. Maybe one or two for selling, but how much beyond the 2 cigar forums I visit do I need to read on cigars? Same old questions and topics over and over.
I find the non-cigar related content to be more engaging. We are vast make up of forum members from just getting by to really wealthy. From voc school to phd... All with plenty of interesting stuff to post a thread on. Ask a question on, etc...
