Good Eats>Anyone else "frying" a turkey with the big easy?

I loved the turkey fryer, but was so expensive due to the peanut oil. Looking forward to giving this a try. Reviews on amazon seem to be pretty good.

I did two turkeys Friday for my work. I also did some jalapenos and pickles.

If its your first time, be very careful it can be very dangerous.

Char-Broil's infrared oil-less turkey fryer is the safe way to fry your turkey. And because it uses NO oil, it's healthier, too. Prepare your turkey with the same injectable marinade you already use, or use seasoned rubs on the outside, which is not an option with traditional fryers. Cooks a turkey from start-to-finish just as quickly as oil-frying without the messy clean-up.
Been tempted to get one of these units. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.

Gentlemen, as you all know; there is no better taste than perfectly deep fried turkey injected with spices and a little dry rub. Besides, it gives you reason to get out of the house on Turkey day and drink some more beer with the boys! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families. Drink a beer and smoke one for me!

Don't get me wrong, I love fried turkey, but I just can't stand the hassle of wasting 5 gallons of peanut oil every year and the cleaning aspect of it. I'll report with pictures and a review of how it turned out.

Down here they have what is called "Southern Frying Oil" not as expensive as Peanut Oil and last year we used the same batch of oil to fry 8 turkeys from Thanksgiving to Christmas. This year I am going to experiment with an "Almost" fried turkey we'll see how that turns out.

I have been very tempted to try the "fryers" but there is just a nagging in the back of my head that says it can't be as good without the oil.

I agree here fully. I love them, but the cost and mess is a big deterent for me I have to admit. I've done about 5 in total and am extremely careful and they have turned out great every time. But, the cost of peanut oil is outrageous and doesn't make a lot of sense if you aren't cooking several turkeys or other deep fried food. Steve

The cost of the oil is expensive but being that this is a once a year occasion I think it is worth it. I have made a deep fried a turkey for the last 2 years and don't think I will ever do it any other way.

:-) Please
VERY CAREFUL!
I'm an insurance agent and have seen way too many articles about bad results.

We did Turkeys last year at work.
We did the oil kind and The Big Easy kind.
The Big Easy looks like its not cooking it when you peak at it. It almost looks like its not done.... I've done a few fried tturkeys, but the Big Easy wasn't my cup of tea. It was easy, just sort of nerve racking wondering if its fully cooked or not.
Taste? Hands down the oil fryer is better IMO. I'd rather spend money on peanut oil and propane than buy a Big Easy.

Well, I put it together this morning and seasoned it with Pam. I then cooked up this 13 lb turkey and this is what I had right around 2 hours later. We used a rub and then injected it with creole seasoning.
This was so nice to use, although I had issues getting the igniter to work, so I light with a match. The one obvious drawback to this unit is the fact that it's not very big around and I think has a limit of cooking up to a 16 lb. turkey. Not too shabby, but for a big family, you might need to consider something else. Virtually no mess to speak of and no hassle of regulating oil temperature like you would with a traditional fryer. Also, no oil bubbling over and creating a mess either.
Nonetheless, it was delicious and kicked the pants off of my M-I-L's turkey out of the oven.

I would seriously give it a shot. I think I'll try this thing for a prime rib for Christmas. It's so nice to just ignite it, set in the bird, and walk away. You know how much fun it is getting the peanut oil to the right temperature and then battling it once you set the turkey in.

that bird looks delicious! I'll have to consider this for the future. This year was just a plain jane oven turkey and I missed the usual fried one.

Cat I work with told me that he did his like that this year. It sounded like a joke, FRY a turkey in
a gimmick-type oven. But he was more than satisfied with it. That's how I came to hear about it,
he was bragging on how good it was. I could see how it would wear OUT a standing rib roast..mmm
