Alright so i downloaded this game called plants vs. Zombies. All the comments said it was clean. When it was downloading it, my computer started tellin me it had a trojan. So i go to start the machine today and all i get at the desktop screen is a blank black screen and the mouse pointer that i can move. I tried to do a system recovery but all it does is take me back to the original black screen. Any way i can fix this or do i need to do a destructive restore? I dont want to lose all my music.

Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (press F8 after the BIOS screen prior to Windows) and the download and run MalWareBytes... :-)

I just tried the F8 safe mode with networking and all i got was the black screen with safe mode in the bottom corners with the operating system info on top. Other than that its a black screen with the pointer. Seems to be doing nothing :-)

Don't download games :-)

Even if you have good anti-virus/spyware monitoring progams running, it's definitely not a sure thing. And most consumer anti-virus programs are not very good. Unless you have a corporate version of one of those, an excellent spyware blocker and a good hardware firewall, downloading applications is just asking for trouble. It's a safe assumption that 95% of things that are out there for free now are contaminated in one way or another.

Just a note, with a lot of these programs, the only way to be sure to fully eradicate them is to rebuild your drives from the partition tables on up.

I would also download a copy MalwareBytes on another PC to a USB drive and then copy it over in safe mode... :-)
