I regularly have the opportunity to buy iPods and/or other mp3 type players for great prices. The only problem is, I have a 32gb iPhone with 21 gb (currently) used for music storage (5 gb free space), and the "deals" on mp3 players are almost always on units with 8 gb. So, am I storing too much music? Can I get by with less? How about your usage?

What sort of Data plan do you have? You could turn on iTunes Match.

Cliff...I have an Iphone 4S (64Gb) that I store music on and travel often with it. It has about 1400 songs on it and still has over 40Gb of free space. I also have an Ipod Classic (180Gb) that I keep my music collection on (over 40,000 songs). Unless I'm traveling, I use my Ipod.

I have about 1200 songs on my phone, I don't know how many GBs that is. I prefer to have 24-36 Gb on my phones.

See Mac.... The 180 gb would hold about 1/4 of my music (that I have on my hard drive). Mostly, I would be well OK with 180 gb for the road, but the cost for that much storage on an iPod just seems prohibitive to me, when I have to have a phone anyway! mine is a regular iPhone4, and 32 gb was biggest available when I brought it. When I get around to upgrading, I'll definitely go with the largest storage option available.
An option I'm considering is a mp3 player that uses SD or micro SD cards, and then I can have unlimited storage, and SD cards are cheap these days. I'd just want a player that accepted the larger capacity cards, so I wouldn't have to carry around 20 cards. And this would mostly be for when i travel.

I'm with you...how hard could it be to build a 500GB Iphone/Ipod. Hell, you can buy a 1TB drive for $75.

The only time there's music on my phone is when I'm put on hold . . . and that sucks, both ways.

I have 4.1GB on my iphone 5. I seldom if ever listen to it, I listen to iheartradio.
In the car I have Sirius. I don't need it or want it, Weeze insists it's hooked up cause we always use my car when we go anywhere. I plug my phone into the car and listen to iheartradio.

My phone was full until I broke down and went with the iTunes music match, now for all intensive purposes there is no music "on" my phone, but at the max I had about 5000 tracks on my phone. heh
