General Discussion>Lamp Berger - Homemade Oils
Montano 09:43 PM 04-14-2011
I just picked up one of these Lamp Bergers and the oils are insanely priced. I've seen where you can make your own using 91% alcohol and fragrance/essential oils. Which type of oils work best, and where can I find these oils ?

Hi Nick. We always used cinnamon and clove essential oils with the 91 in ours. picked up the oils from the health/specialty section in our local supermarket. Spendy stuff for the little bottles, but it sure worked well in the lamp.

Thanks Forrest, are essential oils better to use than fragrance oils ?

Can't answer that as we only used the essential oils. If I remember it was something like 15 drops clove & 20 drops cinnamon per bottle of 91% to get the scent we liked the best. It really did permeate the entire house too.

I should really get it out again. It survived the fire and was a really pretty lamp.

Nick, there is no reason to use the lamp berger
Just throw out all your Niner's gear and the stench of failure will be gone in no time :-)

Nick, I've been making the Lampe oils for a long time and have found that using 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (you can buy at Safeway) works best at keeping the wicks clean and I buy my fragrance oils at Walmart (Elegant Expressions).
I mix approximately 7.5 milliliters (1 & 1/2 tsp) oil to 1 pint alcohol. Hope this helps Bro! :-)

No Safeway's near me, but I think Von's carries the same stuff. I have never seen 99% before (not that I've looked either). I will stop by after Vons and Walmart after work today.

Thanks :-)

I had my kids this weekend, and they said it smelled too much like alcohol. Could it be the 99% is a bit too much ? I think I'll give the 91% a try and see what happens. I put 11 drops of oil in the bottle. That seemed to be the normal amount.....

Nick, 11 drops seems a little light. I would try a few more drops to up the fragrance. You will be fine using 91% alcohol, you may just have to clean your wick a little more often. That "alcohol" smell is just part of the Lampe experience when you burn your own home made fuel. :-)
